QUESTION: Adding ABS to NON-ABS CB7

Hello, because of the accident i was involved in, the fact that it was wet, and when i hit the brakes my tires locked up, and i slid into the person that didn't check their blind spot before changing lanes, and it got me thinking. On all the cars i've driven with ABS, when you slam on the brakes, it does a good job on keeping the tires from locking up, thus helping retain traction, and decreasing stopping distance and time in unperfect weather. I know ABS was a standard feature I believe on the EX and SE models of the cb7. Better safety features not only protect me, but my car as well. I own an LX, and wanted to know what parts would be needed, and what would the installation procedure be.

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

For the cost to add all the components, you mise well buy an ex or se. You know you can pump your brakes in the rain or to stop faster

      "mise well"?

Anyway, that's not really true. Hit a junkyard and you can pull all the ABS stuff for relatively cheap. Installing it is only part that might not make it worth it. It would be fairly complicated, but not impossible. I don't believe anyone here has ever added ABS to an LX/DX before, so you'd be the first!

Buy a car with abs. Learn to drive in the rain thats all Imma say. I dont like my ABS in my car it kicks in a bit soon sometimes which pisses me off. My old EX had no ABS and braked just fine in rain and really well in the dry. I loved it until someone rear ended me.

you would need to do a *LOT* of wiring. the harness is tied across the entire length of the car. i would not attempt it. plus its got high pressure lines that supposedly can only be bled by the dealership, plus non-ABS cars dont have any of the mounting spots for the components.

          buy an EX.

92-93 EX or SE =O. Dunno if 91 SE had ABS I dont think it did but I can be wrong. My 90EX had no ABS.

              Braking

So besides the abs pump motor, abs controller, speed sensors for the four wheels. What other parts am I missing?

Anyone have any numbers for comparison on stopping time and distance improvements with abs vs/non abs? in both wet and dry conditions?

Who else here has every had to stomp the brakes because of other idiots that don't know how to drive? Its an almost instinctual panic reaction, shove foot into brake pedal till it touches the floor!! Tires lock up, car starts sliding...

              What happens next?

i just do Manual peddling during panic stops...learned to do it on my old old old Hyundai Pony

i say just get some S/S brake lines, better tires, good brake pads and u r good to go.

u might as well buy an ABS CB7 instead of going into the trouble of installing all the hardware.

the car gets totalled, and you use the money to buy an EX?

If you were to have sex every day for 365 days a year (using a rubber every time), and you melted them all down... what do you get?

                      A fucking Good Year! lol

Well there are 4 GoodYear Integrity's on the car that came with it, yeah you got that right, i'm rolling with Integrity. lmao

I'll have to start training myself on pumping the brakes when i need to stop suddenly.

To me, ABS is a clutch. Same with airbags, traction control, and just about every other safety feature in cars today. People use those features as an excuse to not be aware of their surroundings. If you aren't 100% alert during a rain storm, relying on ABS to stop you from skidding, it'll be too late before you realize that it ISN'T going to stop you!

I crashed once. And it was due to BAD rear tires (my fault for not replacing them when I did the fronts), icy roads, and my forgetfulness as to which car I was in (it was a 92 Accord, with stock brakes, suspension, and old tires... unlike my other 92 accord where all that is upgraded!) I spun and hit a wall.

Yea ABS is just something to rely on as DEEV said. I would take out mine but I just unplug it every now and then. Its nice to hvae in wet weather but if you know how to modulate the brake pedal ABS shouldnt be an issue. The only time i messed up my braking on my 90EX was when one of the drum cylinders deals was leaking at the boot.

Did you mean crutch? All my other cars have been RWD, and the only safety feature provided is the seat belt. I like better handling of the FWD in wet conditions. (i live in seattle, rains here as much as a rain forest), but on a nice sunny day, hot pavement, aint nothing like driving a RWD sportscar, (i miss that feeling, R.I.P. my my old Rx7).
