what kind of sand paper would i need to sand down the stock lip to paint it?

I'm not to up to date on my grits, but I'd say fine.

i usually wetsand with 600, but it really depends on the condition of the lip.
if you have really deep gashes, then 600 will do nothing to them but smooth them over a little bit. You sort of have to experiment to see what really smooths certain imperfections.

start with like...300...go to 500, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000...mirror finish
ok you may not need THAT high

If you have scratches/gouges, and aren't looking for a workout, i would recommend using 100, and working yourself up, doubling the grit every time till you reach at least 800. Good Luck! Post pictures when your done.Comment

If it's new, just hit it with a red scotchbrite pad to scuff the surface. Then, use a plastic adhesion promoter before you prime it. Make sure to use primer before your color coat, cause the primer will hold to the scratches made by the scuff pad, and help to fill them. After the primer has cured, then top coat it with your color followed by clearcoat if you want.Comment
