It becomes another color when they change out their vats with a new forumla with another color.

GM has many colors that i have over 16 different alternate color chips of the exzact same color.
Your trying to overcomplicate an easy answer to a question that is in no manner a hard answer, which many reliable technicians who do this for a living have givin you.

I'm not trying to over complicate it. I think you just aren't getting my question quite right.

I understand that there are variations in the different batches of paint. I UNDERSTAND THAT.

That does not explain why there are two paint codes for almost every color of our cars. I'm not interested in re-sprays, touch-ups or any of that that would requre paint matching due to fading or batch variation. I'm trying to find out what the difference is between, say; YR501M Cappucino Brown Met. and YR501M-3 Cappucino Brown Met. Does GM have 16 different stickers per color to put in the door jamb of the car depending on which chip it matches? the color code and then -1, -2, -3, -4, -5 etc.

If the -3 in our color code shows a different batch of paint, then all these cars were only made from two batches of paint. I'll buy that one is American painted, the other is Japanese painted, not a problem, but I can't see it being a batch reference number.

most all our paint like spies hecker or autocolor all comes from germany anyways,
I totally understand about the VOC content. Try to buy decent hardwood flooring polyurethane. The VOCs have been halved over the last couple of years.

What's your state going to do about spray paint cans and the uncertified guy? Or is it just in a commercial setting?

th -3 is a quick unit for a cheaper paint co to have for their chip varients.

as cheaper paint co normally only have 1 color per code. if it has 2 codes they will also be able to pull up that code.
more expensive paints will use the 11th digit in your vin.
on some newer models of hondas they actually put the -whatever letter or number their and it is the 11th digit of the vin, just so we don't have to count vin #'s so much.

check yours it may be the same,

every state will have to comply, if you spray these products without all the right filters hvlp paint guns, with the settings they want, etc, it goes on and on, they have the authority to fine you or close you down permiinately, if your a buisness and are not certified, you will be in violation of the law and they can put a ceasure on your facility and close you down without warning. as for normal people, if caught you could be fined an infinitate amount depending on the violations you have insued.

whats interesting is that any airisol can is not in violation, which is pretty hipacritical as alot of self etching primers are much more hazordous than solvant based paints, yet it's legal to spray it out of a can.

I'll see if my paperwork has a www.link to t if so I'll post it up.

Ok, I see. It's laziness on the paint suppliers part.

I'll look into the link, since My brother and I are planning on shooting my car ourselves when I finally get around to the rust repairs. Although I suppose I could always order a couple of cases of custom aerosol cans.

I coulda sworn that I read right here on CB7T that it indeed had something to do with our 11th# in our vin.
I can't find it right now .. I thought it was in one our stickys ..
But Wherm has it right .. that much I do know ..

And I think CasterX touched on it first:

Subaru did this with their paint codes, it determined whether it was painted in Japan or the US.

I've read the sticky, it's extremely helpful, and the 11th digit of my vin is excellent for discovering what exact shade of color the car is supposed to be.

My question was why each seperate color was one of two codes. (YR501M vs. YR501M-3 for example) I didn't ask how to figure out my car's color, and nothing in Keele's fine sticky discusses the reason there are two door jamb sticker codes for each color (although a couple only have one paint code available, which I take to mean that color was only applied at one plant, either the US, or a Japanese plant, but not at both).

All that had to be said was that the code with -3 was painted in the US, without the -3 was painted in Japan.

I've seen both YR94M's side by side
They are WAY different I mean ones brown and ones silver, no joke
                  YR94M is a Brownish silver
                  YR94M-3 is a Silver
I tried to get my flushmount painted (I have the -3) The paintshop could only find YR94M, he had to add silver to it in order to bring the right shade.

To me this tells me that that the -# is a shade
I went to a Autoparts store and bought a Can of YR94M and it was brown...
I bought a Genuine Honda YR94M touch up pen....it was brown
My car (for some reason) was reapainted in the front, someone used YR94M and I can tell lol
Me and the the guy at the paintshop compared the regular YR94M he painted on a stick to the front of my car and it matched.
Atleast my touchup stuff works on half my car
Crappy and old pictures I know, but they show my point

I went to the JY today.
                      I saw a 11/89 JHM CB7 and it had YR94M
I also saw a 89 3rd gen that had YR94M Also from JDMland.
Then another 3rd gen had YR59M, Pretty close in color.

Both my USDM CB's have the -3
So ya I guess the -# reffers to the country the paint was made in.
                      But there are color differences.

Mines is rosewood metallic, and has the -3 in it, she's a 1993.

                        Badge is 1hgcb7.

Maybe -3 is more of a darker color compared to the non (-3)
