I understand that there are variations in the different batches of paint. I UNDERSTAND THAT.
That does not explain why there are two paint codes for almost every color of our cars. I'm not interested in re-sprays, touch-ups or any of that that would requre paint matching due to fading or batch variation. I'm trying to find out what the difference is between, say; YR501M Cappucino Brown Met. and YR501M-3 Cappucino Brown Met. Does GM have 16 different stickers per color to put in the door jamb of the car depending on which chip it matches? the color code and then -1, -2, -3, -4, -5 etc.
If the -3 in our color code shows a different batch of paint, then all these cars were only made from two batches of paint. I'll buy that one is American painted, the other is Japanese painted, not a problem, but I can't see it being a batch reference number.

What's your state going to do about spray paint cans and the uncertified guy? Or is it just in a commercial setting?
