most likely, yes. those screws are really fragile... you need to make sure that you only rethread them back into their original threads, and only snug them down to hold the gauge in place. the screw screws directly into a screw hole on the thin circuit board on the back of the gauge... take it back off and look to see if anything is broken/pulled out of place, it may be fixable... but then again, you may need to find an extra cluster in the junkyard to get the fuel gauge out of.

had the same thing happin to me, but it was apart alot of times first.. theres a super fine(like a strand of hair) wire thats on the guage that goes from the guage to the nut that the screw goes into.
when you over tighten it the nut breaks loose and spins, it breaks the wire.. i tryed to solder it back but was to messed up to fix.. mine reads full all the time, but the gas light still works, and i know i can get over 40 miles from when mine starts coming on..
most likely youll need a new guage.

bumping an old thread cause i encountered a similar problem
i don't think i overtightened my screws at all. when i went to put the last 2 screws back, it felt as if there was NO thread at all. so, it didn't catch any thread, therefore would not screw back in. as a temporary solution, i used electrical tape to hold the screw in the screw hole, but i know it's not making contact with the copper conductor. is there any reason why these 2 screws are not threading? i'm positive that i was careful in removing the screws, but this happened when i was trying to put them back in...
