    Broken automatic, possible manual swap, help plz.

    Ok so I have an automatic currently, but the transmission control unit is partially fried and is only accessing 2 gears. The guys at the shop say it is gonna be about $1200 to fix... So I figured if I am gonna have to pay a crap load, maybe just swap to manual.

    So here is the questions.

    1) Is it worth it to swap to manual?

    2) How hard is it gonna be to find a manual transmission for an F22

    3) What are the usual prices on this kind of swap?

    4) I dunno ;_;

    1. yes. lol.

    2. easy if you have local junkyards

    3. theres an auto-to-manual conversion guide in the sticky at the top of the Swaps forum. it has a list of all required parts. depending on how much you can get them for, you may end up spending the same 1200 or possibly more (including shop labor) to do the conversion. youd have to make sure the shop can do it first!

    4. good luck

      Well it's a shop that is run by former honda mechanics.. they only service hondas and acuras.. and at least 3 of the people working there drive CB7's...

      I mean it's just that I was thinking about doing it anyways. and now I have a reason to do it. but cost has always been the biggest factor.. but I know the automatic would be much more reliable than the automatic. the shop says that they can't find any used control units since they all burn out in the same spot. which is why it's so expensive.

      I think they could find used transmissions and all the parts alot easier than I could since that's what they do anyways. And the biggest part would be eating it on labor.. But they are honda mechanics and not just some performance shop so they have alot of experience on these cars and the swap would be done correctly and cleanly..

      but the problem is always gonna be $$$$$$

      ;_;

      My only other option is to sell it and get what I can for it.. and then scrape up as much as possible and get about a $1500 car.. which really kinda limits me to civics and 240's and shit..

      I don't think I'd jump on another CB7 at the moment...

      my plan was to keep the wagon as a daily driver (which is why I haven't really been making any mods other than cosmetic and stuff) and then have another car as a project..

          Well I wanted to go manual.

          The problem is that to fix the auto, it's gonna cost $1200

          so if I can switch to manual for less than or equal to that cost.. I would prefer that.

            i got all my manual parts from this site for a couple hundred bucks, well...i dont knwo if its all the parts...i havnt even opend the packages yet for the fear that i might lose something...which i tend to do quite often...and a guy i know is going to install it all for me for a couple hundred as well. so id say for you gettin a manual swap for under 1200 should be very easy! probably even under 900 if your lucky!*including install*

                it's not the actually tranny.. it's the control unit.. so it's like computer shit that is broken.

                  if you buy it yourself here or at a junkyard, you can get a tranny for less than 200 and the transmission control unit (called a TCU) for less than 50 bux. its only 4 screws and 2 plugs to put the new computer unit in, it may be worth your while to try throwing one in, see if it fixes the problem. post up a "wanted to buy" thread in the classifieds section, im sure somebody here has a TCU for sale cheap...

                  or dont bother, and just use it as an excuse to convert to 5spd

                    you know at this point it's gonna be too much hassle to do the swap now.. and I really did want an excuse to go to 5spd... So I think I may just get a 240 or some other sporty little coupe that I can drive around and then save up to do the swap and have the bodywork done on the accord also... basically get a little manual coupe and then slowly over time turn the accord into a VIP show car..

                    My plan from the start was to have the accord as a daily driver and then have a second car as a project car.. but at this point it may be going the vice versa route.

                    my shitty accord will rise from the ashes some day.. in like 20 years.

                    edit: also, can I get all the parts for the swap here? cause I know you need more than just the tranny.. and the dude at the shop was like "well you need blah blah blah and you basically need a donor car to do it and it's gonna be really expensive".... when he just quoted me $1200 for a TCU brand new from honda.. and then I would still have to pay labor charges..

                      of course you can get all the parts here, look in the swaps section, the first sticky, theres a link near the bottom with the auto-manual swap, it lists pretty much all the parts you'll need. print that out, and start going to junkyards and getting parts 1 at a time or something

                        well I have been looking at other cars and alot of them are either crap or overpriced..

                        I did see a nice $500 CB7 sedan for sale near here though.. manual and everything..

                        anyways... I have been thinking, it might be easier to start collecting up the parts to do the swap.. I mean I wouldn't be getting it done any time in the next month or so anyways..

                        so I guess I will have to decide what to do... thing is.. I don't have like all the money on hand.. so it's not like I have $1,000 sitting around... I'm really pretty broke at the moment and more than likely my mom was gonna pay to get it fixed and then I would pay her back when I have the money.. oh well.. dunno..

                            dude da9b16 is here in irving and has an h23 auto tranny he wants to get rid of for cheap. He might help you put it in too he just put an h22 lsd auto tranny in his wagon http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=66223 check it out and pm him he's cool. I was gonna get the tranny myself but I really need to just do the 5spd converson. Still though it's better than a stock auto transmission. Btw the tcu is $25-$50 at junk yards. May not be your problem though if it it's shifting weird the whole tranny could be bad or the shifter solenoids on the transmission for one/some of the gears could be bad. If you can find out what you need and pull it it'll be waaay cheaper. Either way ask this guy about the transmission he has he is trying to get rid of stuff. Btw just so you know if you want to try to get the tcu it's located in the passenger floor board under the glove compartment, just take the carpet back and it'll be the box on the right (the left is the ECU that controls your engine.) Take off the metal 'cage' if you will that holds the tcu and ecu and use a flathead to unlatch the wire plugs.
