yeah there's this short protection switch underneath the steering wheel, its a RED colored switch...you're supposed to unplug you battery first, fully disconnect....first neg, then pos., then you remove that panel on the bottom of the steering wheel to access the short protection switch. Basically, unplug the airbag and plug it into the red connector, that's a safety measure that doesn't deploy the airbag.
I just swapped steering wheels today from one from the JY b/c my vinyl covering on the wheel was unglued and was "loose" idk how else to describe it, so I found one w/ the vinyl still "glued" to the metal rim and swapped that one on there.
As long as the batt. is unplugged, you should be fine.
See but i bet he didn't even know that the saftey mech existed.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm swapping an ITR wheel into my CB but i got one of those shitty ebay wheels in my car now. I got rid of all the oem parts years ago and can't remember how it went. I cant find the wiring harness thats supposed to hook to the horn contact ring. Is the plug that hooks into the black horn contact ring part of the airbag clock spring wiring?
You dont need an airbag =D. Just get a 5 pt harness if all else fails put a pillow on y our steering wheel. To redo the components I recommend everything new if you pulled it out. SOurcing used parts might be ok but its a hit or miss. Over time some of the parts might develop resistance readings that throw off the airbag sensors. If you just put a wheel on I am pretty sure they disconnected the plug down the steering column where it hits the firing mechanism for the bag and clockspring. So you would have to source both of those. Usually all the horn buttons and so on as I recall come out the middle of the clockspring as individual wires or plugs. I havent taken apart my cb bag so I wouldnt be able to tell you.

Thanks Wolf. Thats what I thought it was for but I wanted to make sure before I went and bought that whole mechanism just to get my horn working again. I'm not worried about the air bag. The ITR wheel I just bought is a non-SRS wheel anyways.
