    hearing a knock.....

I've been hearing a knock lately, sounds like the bottom end, but I'm not sure. Happens in all gears, only accelerating, around 2500-4000 rpms only, but I hear it most clearly when in 3rd gear. I cannot hear it with my stethoscope at engine idle or while revving the engine, only when the engine is under load/moving do I hear the noise.

My first thought was a bad driver's side cv axle, but I'm not getting any steering wheel vibrations and also the noise goes away at upper rpms....not symptoms of a bad axle.

Oil pressure has been staying normal.

Does this "knock" occur while in neutral or not at problematic RPM range?

I thought about that too, but they're only about 2 years old (roh swap) and oem parts.

It's a heavy thumping, not a light ticking.....intermediate shaft bearing?

They're brand new (1,000 miles), all bushings in suspension are poly (~2yrs old). Tierod ends are all tight and car had a fresh alignment with new tires.

So your issue is driveline related. However, you describe a "knocking" noise. Yet, you used the word "thump" later in the thread.

Can you describe this noise more effectively, I'm getting confused.

FYI, intermediate shaft bearing does cause for steering wheel vibration. I'm dealing with that isuse now and both CV shafts are in good condition and not the problem. I plan to rebuild the intermediate shaft with new OEM bearing, snap-rings, etc.

I only described it as a "thump" to differentiate it from a "tick", lol. I've heard plenty of bottom-end knocks before and that's what this sounds like, I just don't understand why it only happens under certain conditions....and was hoping it could be something else.

Is the problem heard or felt?

What location does this problem come from (front-left, front-right, front & you can't differentiate which side, etc)?

Does the problem change frequency or sound/feeling when turning left or right?

Anything happen different when driving over bumpy roads?

Any drag felt or directional pulling?

It's heard only. I can hear it most clearly in 3rd gear while accelerating for whatever reason....so I'm not sure if it goes away around curves.

Seems to be coming from the front driver's side.

Over bumpy roads, the tire/suspension/road noise is loud enough to mask the knocking.

Man, these types of problems are difficult to diagnose over the internet. Would go so much easier in person and personally experiencing the problem.

I'd jack up the front end and inspect everything that rotates while in gear on driver-side corner. Look at the brakes, do wheel bearing check (12 & 6 push/pull method), check CV shaft, check intermediate shaft support bearing. Look for any excessive play or even foreign material where it should not be. Inspect the tire as well, even look for stones stuck between the treads (had that happen to my wife's Element Michelin LTX tires).

So I drove around with my camera under the hood recording today but couldn't get the dang knock to reproduce......it's alot warmer today than it was last week....I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I usually drive really short trips and possibly when the temps are really cold it allows a bit of piston slap or something.

Anyway, here's a link to one of my videos, it's sorta boring but WOT @ 1:40-1:50 is pretty good. video link

BTW, is the power steering pump always that loud (high pitched whirring).
