I just made one for myself. I can't get around since my engine is all torn apart and mom's gone to work for the week starting tomorrow, so I won't be able to get to honda for a long time, and the only thing i can find on ebay is this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/F22-B...spagenameZWD1V

^bastards charge too much for everything they've got. I'll get a real one and install it after I'm mobile again, but the engine will be in by then, this seal is new, and I don't think this retainer will fail so I'm not going to be in any rush. Matter of fact, I may just check it every 5,000 miles for 15,000 to make sure it's not breaking, bending or anything else. Anyway, I just took a metal plate, drilled 2 holes for the screw holes right there, and a 1 1/4" hole for the balance shaft to go through, then took another metal plate, drilled 2 holes in it and set that under to make a level surface between the seal and where the pressure was on the "retainer". It's not hard if you have access to a drill press. What I'm trippin on, though, is I don't believe I have any thrust bearings for it, I don't see anywhere for a set to go either in the block or an anti-friction surface on the balance shaft for one to go, so I have play trying to knock this seal out too. Is that just me, or is that part of the problem too?

Nice link, very good write up. The only thing he forgot to mention in the new parts list is a cam seal.

Mine just snapped but it's getting fixed as we speak. The one they are putting in right now looks like this one. YAY, at least I have that added confort.

Wow, you're pretty lucky the motor didn't lock up. Just to be safe, I would pull off the rockershafts and check the cam and all the journals for damage.

This 92 that I just bought, the balancer seal popped out on it and the guy said he was driving and saw the oil light come on but before he was even able to shut the car off, the engine died...the cam locked up and broke in half. This is why I was able to buy it for only $800. It seems that most people don't realize what a very serious and all too common problem this is on this motor. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ONE ALREADY, INSTALL THIS SEAL RETAINER ASAP! ...this goes for everyone who has a F or H series engine.

^^^ LOL, sorry I didn't clearify..... my timing belt snapped due to that seal leaking. Right now it's getting a brand new seal and retainer installed. Sorry about that.

You're probably referring to the cam seal, this is the seal that leaks and causes the t-belt to break. The balancer seals don't usually leak...they just pop out all of a sudden.

wow what a great heads up! now what's the exact details of what the motor will go through when the seal walks off (besides seizing!)?

as soon as that seal pops out, all the of engine oil pours out of the engine within a matter of seconds. The only warning you might have (if your even paying attention) is the oil light may come on...but even then, it may be already too late.

My timing belt kit is on the way, it includes all those nitpick little things..I need to replace my oil pan gasket too, and maybe my accessory belt because its been squeaking. It will make me sleep better at night.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.
