    Camshaft bolt snapped

when putting the rocker arm back on, one of my 10mm bolts snapped (the one that covers right by the dizzy)

the isnt enough sticking out to grab with pliers..im not too good with this whole tapping things either

suggestions on the best way to go about this?

since it was the 10mm and not the 12mm..its pretty small.

Drill, Bits and an extractor kit, plus lots of patience will do the job.

this bolt is in my block, so that's pretty awesome

sounds like someone needs to buy a set of torque wrenches!

i had the rented one from autozone actually

the Haynes manual called for 15 or 16 foot per pound for the 12mm

and 108 inch per lb for the 10mm

          which 108 in= 9 ft

i barely turned before this thing snapped..of course i couldn't feel the pressure really being exerted because the leverage of that torque wrench.

I snapped that exact same bolt doing the exact same thing. I tried to drill into it and use an extractor bit but that didn't do shit so what I did was I used a small ass flathead (REALLY small like the ones used for little ass screws) and tapped it out in a circular motion until there was enough exposed to grab it with some needlenose pliers and got the rest out. Thank god its not tightened down in there so backing it out isn't that tough.

i picked up a nice set of bits, and a set of extractors..today is my work day Friday, so tomorrow i tackle this

i was also thinking the flathead approach..get a nice enough groove in the bole, then a flat head socket adapter maybe..get enough leverage on that and hope for the best

but if worst came to worst how bad is it to run without it?

i know it sounds haphazard and noobish and unsafe...it is technically part of the rocker arm assembly..but would there be serious risk to run without this until i get this taken care of.. to clarify, the red circle:

well, i have learned my lesson..ill torque the 12mm down the way they suggest. but those 10mm i will use my best judgement.

it was just a big shit on my parade when i had everything all ready to be reinstalled, adjust my valves and start her up. that shit happens

its always something.. every small misfortune is making me a little more well-rounded. 20 year old bolts are fun!

still curious as to the risk of running without this bolt

if the others are down tight it should be a big issue. i snapped 2 of the 10mm that actually held down the spark tube.i tried to extract them but they wont come out.Ive been running without them there for at least 4 months and everything is okay with no leaks.i have a rebuilt head just incase something does go wrong.

so now i gotta wait for tomorrow morning, Honda had none of these in stock

It calls for inch pounds not foot lbs. its basically screwdriver hand tight.

i saw it was 108 inch per pound..i dont know much about torque specs..i figured 108 inches converts to 9 ft

but im not using the torque wrench for those, just for the 12mm now
