    Automatic Transmission Failure

I have been helping out a friend of mine with this issue and it has got us no where.

He has a 1990 Honda Accord EX Auto with 158k. As much as I know the car stop shifting from 2nd gear and on.. CEL came on as well as the S light. Pulled out the codes as there was a few on the CEL side and fixed every code.

On the TCU side it kept reading Code 15 which is the VSS. At this point both solenoids where replaced with working ones and still problem persist so we went ahead and replaced the VSS with a new one and no luck either. Wire harness that goes from the TCU to the solenoids was check and even re-wired and still no luck.

We also searched and read plenty of the threads regarding this issue and came across the NM and NC sensors on the passenger side of the transmission of which both where replaced recently and no change in the transmission.

The TCU keeps reading Code 15 VSS. The transmission does go into P,R,N,D4 but only stays in 1st gear. Now we reset the ECU and TCU and the car does shift thru all D gears perfectly fine but as soon as the TCU pops Code 15 it stops shifting and it does it every time.

Last thing to replace would be the VSS Gear assembly which is the only thing that has not been touched. The TCU has also been replaced with a working one from the same 90-91 accord. It has been frustrating trying to figure out the problem.

Still chasing it? Man what a gremlin. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Have you replaced the VSS harness itself just in case there are bad contacts in there?

No problem man. You have helped us out greatly into troubleshooting things I did not know of as working on an automatic is my first.

I have not checked the connector plug its worth a shot. I am still sure that it has to be a electrical problem. A shop suggested that it might be a clutch in the transmission but would that not be problem all the time?

Since the transmission shifts fine every time the TCU is reset before the Code 15 comes on.

I would rule out mechanical failure too because the problem goes away. Is there P/S fluid still going through the vss? can you detect a signal from the VSS? It should go from 0v-5v as the wheel turns, lift the front end up on jack stands and connect the voltmeter to the plug and slowly rotate the wheels by hand with the key in the on position but motor off.

Sounds like a plan. Check harness plug not connector on the VSS sensor right?

Right, work your way to the VSS from the TCU since the TCU is indictating a fault with VSS.

I apologize for the misinterpretation Code 15 on the TCU is 15-Kick down switch circuit shorted.

Not sure if that does make a difference or not but that is the only code on the TCU. No code on the CEL.

Have you inspected the kick down cable? Is it binding or too tight?
No wonder why replacing the VSS did nothing lol...

I may have an extra switch laying around if you need to swap it out for a test.

How can we adjust it or troubleshoot it?

Ok we'll looks like the cable that goes from the transmission to the throttle body has a lot of play in it.

LOL, that may be the only problem. Sucks fighting something simple and it kicking your ass. If that doesn't fix the problem then test the switch itself by actuating it manually and seeing if the switch throws. Disconnect the harness from the switch only and check the ohms with the switch open and closed.

Ok where would that switch be? I only see the lever on the transmission?

                              Rep for you bill.

Hope this helps out. My friend is already looking for a new transmission I feel that it will be happening here very shortly.
