    Speedo glitch?

Hey everyone! I got an unusual problem. A few months ago when I got my cb7, my speedometer didnt work (wasn't giving me speed, but tach was fine). Replaced the speedo cable and worked fine. This morning while driving to work, my speedo dropped all the way down to zero while moving and a CEL came on. Having arrived at work, I turned off my car completely, started it back up, and drove arund for a bit. The speed was reading fine. Got home and the speedo cable and sensor was fine. So far, it hasnt done it since.

Is this like a one-time thing or is there an underlying problem somewhere? Been reading around the other topifs and didnt find anything about this problem...

Read the code for the CEL.

I'm guessing your VSS may be going bad. Or, the connector is loose.

i payed about $5 at a junkyard about 3 years ago. been working fine ever since. IIRC autozone wants about $110 for a brandnew one.

what i think you should do: go snag one off a low miles CB7 at the junkyard and your good to go!

Hey I don't want to hijack this thread or anything, but I'd rather not create a new thread for my problem. My Speedometer seems to be off all of a sudden, as you can see from the photo:

The tires are all properly inflated and I haven't gone up/down in tire size. Could my issue be related to the OP issue?

                Thanks!

Mine is off by 3mph. Actually travels 3mph slower than actual speed, according to my GARMIN GPS. Helps to know when barreling down a highway and a cop pulls me over... "I wasn't going at 100 miles per hour, just 97. Honest..."

2.5 mph off is the max on honda spec

                      mine is 4 mph off.

im going to replace it soon so i will make a diy. Maybe it will answer some questions on why it is the way it is.

                        Mine's off all the time.

                        Driving 50km/h - Speedo reports 40km/h
                        Driving 60km/h - Speedo reports 50km/h
                        Driving 115km/h - Speedo reports 125km/h
                        Driving 125km/h - Speedo reports 140km/h

It's a pain in the ass, I really have no idea how fast I'm actually going. I don't have time to pull out my phone every time I need to know how fast I'm driving. I assume the VSS is toast and needs to be replaced.

Have you (or a previous owner) messed with the cluster? I had problems with my wagon cluster, installed a sedan printed circuit board (PCB), then speedo was off by a constant factor (similar to what you report). I had to install a sedan speedo (130 mph) in place of the wagon speedo (140 mph) to get the speed to display correctly.

To the OP, if your odometers and cruise control both stop working when the speedo does, then it is the VSS. If only the speedo stops working, it is the speedo or something in the cluster (corrosion on the PCB in my wagon).

It's only recently started giving me problems, noticed it this week. Up until now the speedometer speeds were fine. I doubt the previous owner messed with the cluster, however there is a crack along the bottom near the tac. Perhaps that's a sign it was tampered with?

Creating a new thread is always better than threadjacking, or digging up old threads. New threads don't cost anything.
