heater control knob/valve ?

So yesterday morning it was colder and I tried to turn the knob to warm it wouldn't move all the way. It normally has a little catch in the middle.
Long story short something broke and now the knob turns freely and doesn't change the temp.

So I went in the engine bay and attempted to manually open the heater valve. It wouldn't move at all .

Is the valve not moving normal? I assume i should be able to move it by hand, correct?

I am almost positive the dial is broken behind where the cable attaches at the climate control. But if the valve is stuck then replacing the whatever is broken in the dash won't fix my problem.

My 91 accord manual doesn't say if I should be able to move the valve or not. It just mainly talks about adjusting the cables

Yes you should be able to move it by hand. I have to do this because I have a snag in my cable somewhere.

If you have taken the climate controls out before, then you know how "sturdy" that connection is.

I thought I should be able to. Just kind of odd how one day it just stopped working.

If the cable is stuck, it may prevent you from moving the valve as well. To verify that the valve does or does not move freely, there is a clip that holds the cable to the valve bracket, undo the clip, lift the cable loop off the valve arm, then try to move the valve. If the valve moves freely, the problem is likely the cable. If the valve does not move, replace it. Push/pull the cable to make sure it moves freely.
