VSS? or? No Speedometer but I have RPM?

I was on the freeway, looked down and saw my "check-engine" light on?
Looked at my temp gauge, mayyyyybe a itsie, bitsie over the middle?
Looked at my speedo, NOthing? But my tack was working fine ..
    I was doing about 60-65 in 5th in this picture ... ^

A low rpm idle (350-450) when at a light .. goes thru all 5 gears,
No other noticeable idiosyncrasies .. pulled in the drive-way, shut er off ...
started er back up, about 750-800 rpm .. NO check-engine light ..

Went out the drive-way around the block .. no CEL .. got half way home,
BANG! The CELL came on again .. got in the drive-way, shut er off ...
started er back up, NO CEL ...

Is this a weak VSS about to go kaput?
I'll be on eBay if anyone needs me ..
Oh and EDIT: My odometer and trip meter do not function.

Sounds like the VSS. Check the wire connections, make sure they are clean and tight. Then maybe try and pull any stored codes from the ECU.

The tach is run off a signal from the ignitor in the distributor not the VSS.

      Ah! Thanks!
Yeah, I figured it was the VSS, I'll get one off eBay and have it thrown in ..
I thought about looking at the connections as you suggested .. and I don't see anything .. they're pretty clean.
wiggled some shit around .. still .. but it only happens when I go into like 2nd gear or later ..
no real consistency about just when it decides to come on ..

      Thanks for the confirmation GA!

Using a multi-meter is the quickest way to test, looking for an open on either the power or ground side of the sensor. Have you altered the harness at all, maybe attempted a tuck? Solid power and ground would likely confirm a sensor failure.
