    Honda Accord Rust

I asked a body shop around here and they asked for 450 CAD (352 USD)...

I have no idea if this is a good price or not...Any thoughts? Is worth paying it than DIY ?

This two are on the same panel.

This is not getting into the back door frame

That is not a bad price if they are cutting the rot out, welding in patch panels, painting and clear coating the panels where the rust is.

Where are you located? Is that an SE?

What are they going to do to it for that price? I'm kind of curious what price I would be expecting for my rust bucket.
        I'm faster then a prius

For that price, it is probably just bondo and paint. Get a written description of exactly what they plan to do. Do you know what it looks like behind the bumper cover?

Yeah, and if they do that, it will just look like the original pictures in a year or two.

There's no fixing rust like that. Cut it out and weld in new metal is the only way to properly fix that rust issue. Any other fix is just a bandaid and rust doesn't heal like a cut on your skin does. It just festers underneath and gets worse.

Not to scare you greenquark, but if you don't deal with it, it eventually gets to look like this: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=180806

I paid about $700 USD a decade ago to have a patch panel welded in, and the entire car repainted. The rust returned along the welds of the patch panel. Had it done again, and it returned again.

The best way to do this is to install a FULL replacement panel, which requires welding. It can be pretty involved work, and it won't be cheap.

Whatever that cheap repair is going to be, welded or bondo, it's likely that the rust will continue to spread underneath, and return at a later date. It may slow the cancer, but it won't likely stop it.

Also, is your car a US model? I thought Canadian models had the LX as the base (the Canadian LX is essentially a US DX.)

Lol This happened to me too. I paid exactly the same 10 years ago. 700, all the rusted spots ( the same locations) were fixed and car repainted. After 10 years this is back.

By the way I check underneath and there is no rust. It looks superficial

My car is a DX ..... Atlanta factory , made in USA . I used to live in Miami but moved to Montreal. And I have never driven this baby in winter. I put it away in Winter. 178 000 miles on it.

Ah, gotcha. I figured it was probably a US-spec car!

If it's superficial, you should be able to grind it off and repaint... but if you don't get absolutely all of it, it'll definitely come back.

I am a bit doubtful about it . Since I got this car in 2001 , I noticed water got into the trunk during rain. It accumulates just under the antenna location. I thought it was the antenna's hole, it was not. I sealed around the rear windshield , water kept getting in. At the end I decided drilling a hole so the water could drip out :/ . I even replaced the rubber band around the trunk. When doing so, I noticed rust where the rubber band goes around the driver's side trunk hinge.

It may be getting in at the tail lights. New gaskets are actually pretty easy to make.

That wouldn't hurt. What material should I use to make the gaskets? I have a diving/swimming suit lying around here, it is made of neoprene. Do you think it might work?

Last I checked, gaskets for the 90-91 outer tail lights are only a few busks (and they'll fit 92-93). Another common leak spot are eight clips that hold the bottom section of the chrome trim around the rear windshield. Each one has a gasket where it penetrates the body. Next time it rains, stick your finger through the oval slots in the body just ahead of the trunk opening below the base of the rear windshield. If there is water around the slots (curl your finger tip down), then these clips are leaking. The water will run in this channel to either side of the trunk (left side being right about where the antenna is). Also check for staining around the vent on the left side of the trunk (rearward from where the antenna is). To replace the gasket on the vent, the rear bumper has to be removed.

A few years back, I noticed exactly that. I had rust in those spots too . I put some epoxy along the lower rear window joint. Water got in some time after. I also noticed that If I park my car on a hill head down , I got lot more water in the trunk than if it is parked head up.

                              I will check this!

Light gasket are fine. I replaced them last year. I just didn't remember
