    Auto Tranny Gear Selector Difficulty

Hey Guys, The transmission gear selector (what do you call it?! ) sometimes is really hard to yank out of park. Sometimes it's hard to put back in park. Sometimes when it's really hot in the car (after sitting in the sun) it just slides out normally. I'm kinda tired of having to yank it. (Yes I'm a wimp, yes there is something wrong with it.)

Is it the shifter (gear selector) itself or the transmission? Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission: follow the cable to the underside of the transmission, remove three or four bolts that hold the cover on, (if memory serves correctly) undo the locking tab for the cable to shifter shaft bolt, remove the bolt, remove the cable end from the transmission shift shaft. If the shifter (inside the car) is still difficult to move, then the problem is in the shifter. Use an appropriate tool (not sure what that is) to try to move the transmission shifter shaft - if that is still difficult, then the problem is in the transmission.

Ok... I'm kinda assuming it's the shifter, just the way it feels, but I don't know for sure. I might do that, when I have time.

Does it act more like the handle doesn't want to move? It's been a while since I took one apart to see how the button works to prevent movement of the lever. I have a couple spare shifter assemblies; I may pull one out and take a look at it.

I don't think the button has anything to do with it.
Why would the tranny be doing that? (If it is the tranny)

Just so we're clear, let's back up a bit. When you say it is hard to yank out of park and to put back into park, are you using the button on the left side of the handle when trying to get it into and out of park? It shouldn't just "slide out" without using the button like it will slide when going from reverse to D4 or from D4 to D3.

Yes! The button is working fine, I've taken apart the center console before, and everything looked fine. It requires me to press the button to get out of park.
