yeah i'd really like to do that to my plastic altezzas right about now. do you think that paint would work well for my plastic tails or should i go for a more plastic type of spray paint like the krylon fusion brand?

there is no transparent red krylon fusion... just krylon stained glass red, also you can sometimes find small cans of Testors transparent red in walmart.

i wouldnt recommend clearcoat, itll make it look hazier... i wonder if a fine grit wetsand and a polish would work without taking any sections of the paint off.

go to hobby town usa and buy some candy apple red paint. paint them and don't mess with them for a couple of weeks, it will stay for a real long time.

          Great write-up but...

...I wonder despite other results that you have mentioned, exactly how durable is this paint. Also, would it not help if one was to take 2000grit sand paper and just lightly sand the taillights.

I did this about a month ago... w/o a write up.... and I sanded one and not the other because I forgot... and there is no real differnece. None at all in fact.

I also Clearcoated mine, and they look great. They came out a little rough to the touch... so I CAREFULLY wetsanded them after the clear.

Also... windex the tails and them wipe them down with some Degreaser/Palmolive dish soap. This will get rid of any hand oils that you got on them when you removed them.

                  Blowing the dust off...

Im about to attempt this on my oem tails. I picked up a can of "Krylon-Paper Finishes-Stained Glass Sheer Color" Paint and it worked great on my courtesy lights. I suggest the same for the red. I found it at Hobby Lobby, if you dont have one, i suggest a big hobby center like Michael's or perhaps even Wal Mart. Now, im just gonna tape off the reverse light and do it. Im not sure if i should sand first or not, perhaps yes on one and no on the other just to see the results. My driver-side tail also has some small scrathes of paint or something so im just gonna paint the whole thing over. Ill try to get pics up, if i cant get pics, ill still let everyone know how it comes out.

Cool. I got mine at Hobby Lobby too. Michael's doesn't have anything, but WalMart has the same paint, but made by Testors. It's not in the spray paint isle, but in the model plane/car isle

I like those wagon tails Looks different for sure.

I found some paint at ACE Hardware and the cap looked red, but i got it home and tested it, and it was more of a magenta or dark pink. So ima hafta check out wal mart or make the trek to phoenix for a Hobby Lobby I was gonna paint just the amber, but my driver side tail looks odd and it has a few scratches so i think im just gonna tape off the reverse and paint the whole thing. ah..ill keep it posted

Do you think this could be done with amber paint, the tails are more of an orange then a true "amber" like the corner lenses we have, i would love to make them like that. or maybe get some red clear tails and like make them smoked amber on teh top i dunno

There is a "JDM" headlight/taillight paint that a lot of people are selling on eBay, in red and smoke colors. It's kind of expensive at less than 3oz. for 20+ bucks after shipping, but it's made for exactly what we're doing. I just ordered some today, I was skeptical about the quality until I looked around for "DIY red taillights" on google and saw people using the exact same shit on their lexus 350s and what not, with sweet pics.... Have any of you used the stuff I'm talking about? Most of the can is in Japanese. The smoked looks cool too but I don't know how legal that is around these parts.....

How would this look on stock 92-93 tails? the ones with red on top and orange on bottom?

they also have inner plastic pieces so it isnt really tansparent so I dont know what king of effect it will bring.

On the wiki someone made a DIY for stock 9293 tails. And it looked sweet! It was all read with the reverse right. They looked like red/clears but obviously more red. I almost liked them more, kinda cool. Anyone see that?

But on that note, I'm assuming picking up this read kind of paint and painting the whole tail light might look good. Ideas?
