I think Texas actually has some wording in... something... that makes them the one state that actually COULD pull out of the union if they so chose.
Texas really is about the size of a number of European countries as well...

Think about that for a second...

Right. The troops are US troops. If Texas became an independent state, US troops would be on foreign soil, essentially. They would pull out, and take all their goodies with them. Texas would be left with an empty shell of a military installation, which they would need to fill themselves.
Doesn't matter that Texas paid for it. They paid their due to the US government. It's not a situation of "you take your shit, and we'll take ours". You don't get to take US troops with you when you leave. When they're finished with their obligation to the US government, they are free to return to Texas and join the Texan military.
Now, if it were to happen... would Texas become a separate country, not at all affiliated with the US? Or would it become more like Puerto Rico... sort of a pseudo-state? (because PR wants to become a state... we could always boot Texas and keep our number at 50 by taking on PR instead!)
