    Projector Modification In-Process

    Hi all,

Since I have a spare set of 1-piece Ebay style projectors laying around, I'm going to attempt to modify them for good light output.

As everyone knows, the stock Ebay projectors have H3 bulbs, and have really bad lightout put becuase of their H3 bulbs.

What' I'm trying to do is fit an H1 bulb into it. I already have one in the low beam housing. I dremeled out where the bulb went in to allow for the H1 base.

The reason I went with the H1 is from this data courtesy of www.rallylights.com. It shows the output of each bulb in lumens.

    H1 – 1550 lumens
    H3 – 1450 lumens
    9006 – 1000 lumens

So according to this, the H1 bulb should provide me with better output than the H3. I'm just going to compare this to the stock light output just to see what happens. I'll keep this thread updated to see what happens.

I will keep everyone posted. This is just my idea for the winter. I will be switching back to the stock headlights in the summer again, unless these ones completely stink.

I do have my Mom's car as a way to compare stock lighting to the modified projectors. I think that will be educational if nothing else, right?

so why did they put h3 in it, why not just put the h1, cheaper cost maybe???

yah probly production costs, the h1 is a taller bulb than the h3. It wouldnt mean alot of money in just the bulb sence they include a h1 bulb for the highbeams already with the ebay projectors. I dont know. Are you going to do a incandecent bulb or like a HID set up? The projector element in the ebay projectors isnt the worst in the world, the cut off is decent enuf with HID not to get highbeamed ever 3rd or 4th car if you aim them right.
I cant Slam further. The ground refuses to get any lower.

I'm not doing HID, just standard halogen bulbs. I'm finishing up this tonight more than likely and will take a picture or two to show where I'm at.

I don't know what the output will be like on the road. I'm not even really a fan of the unit, but I'm just curious to see what they'll do for output. Since winter is coming, I really want to have as much light as possible.

im in the process of doing the same with a HID set up w/ angel eyes. I want to see if the projectors and cutoff shield are worthy with hid setup. if not ive got a set of valeos ill be swapping in.

So yeah, this was a terrible idea. The light output is 4 beams instead of a broad range of light. It's very dim, and without the fog lights I just added, I wouldn't be able to drive with them on.

                  So yeah, don't do this.

My camera isn't good for night pictures, but I have one of the beam pattern I can upload tomorrow.

They just don't have any sort of distance, and the beam pattery is just lousy. To put it in better terms, I just added a set of driving lights, and at points I wasn't even driving iwth the headlights on and I didn't know the difference.

I'm taking them off and selling ASAP. It's rather sad though, becuase I kinda dug the 1-piece look.

Ebay projectors suck. If you wanna rapidly increase the quality of the light quality of them w/o spending crazy money, get the A4 H7 projectors. Can't really go wrong for $100 and they're of good quality.

I'm well aware of that. I got that for free...I just wanted to see why everyone said they were so bad for myself...and wanted to see if I could modify them to produce more output. For the new bulbs I added and the 20 minutes I spent with my Dremel it was worth it in my book to see what they were like.

This is an very bad, uncorrected picture of the beam pattern. The 4 distinct pencil beams of light should be noticeable in this picture. This was with no exposure compenstation, and no flash. This is literally how bright the headlights were.
