An alternator is stressed when under load, this stress increases the force to turn the alternator. The amount of force needed to turn the alternator affects motor output. Think of the ELD as similar to the A/C compressor, but it doesn't physically disengage a clutch. Since it would always detect a load it would always be enabled, in other words your alternator would work full time, similar to in a domestic vehicle.
