Another tool question, I hope I am not posting in the wrong section. I am sure most of you use hydraulic jacks but I have had many fail on me, including one that cost $150. Maybe I need something more "retard-proof" and even I am not stupid enough to ruin something like a scissor jack. I know the one in the trunk is meant for 1250 lbs I believe it states. I am considering getting a heavier duty scissor jack. I know it takes more effort to lift and is longer, but I do not care about those considerations. I will not use it to support the car, I will be using it to get jack stands underneath, will this be OK for me to do?

Good to hear. The next question is there a way to better stabilize one like welding a plate below.Be unique, like every other person.

Yes. just dont burn thru the cheap stamped steel of the jack or get it so hot it ruins the metals tempering. Ive seen plain vanilla ones fold over like aluminum foil because they had some lateral force going on (car wasnt on an perfectly flat spot)Originally posted by XCRN View PostGood to hear. Well I had to lift the whole front of the car with the emergency jack and it was relatively stable but not enough, I guess I was over loading it.Be unique, like every other person.

yeah its really just made to go onto the 4 pinch weld points, and only have vertical forces exerted on it. um so you say you kill hydro jacks.. hmm did you try putting brake fluid in them or something? i have some old one i got old, and have had it over 5 years, its some no name one..works fine.. you can put mineral oil in, jack oil, air tool oil. anything with a mineral oil base..never ever brake fluid, atf or motor oil. it eats the seal. anyway this things like 15 years old at least, thrashed on. wasnt pumping 100% used half a quart of airtool oil, omg it was like it was new..it was nice working on my car about 5 or 6 clicks on the jackstands instead of the normal 2 or 3..cause the jack would max out in height.. anyway, you seem smart why doubt yourself, get r done.Originally posted by XCRN View PostWell I had to lift the whole front of the car with the emergency jack and it was relatively stable but not enough, I guess I was over loading it.

Maybe its the $50 ones I buy, but the $150 jack went out in around 2 months so I am not sure what I did wrong. I guess lack of oiling could have been it, but with a scissor jack, I would have to be really stupid to break it and I do take pride in being an idiot on occasion, I am not that stupid.Be unique, like every other person.

I got a little more than a year out of a $100 Craftsman jack that my ex gave me for Christmas. That was my last hydraulic. I won't bother with them again.
I want to make an adapter that will allow me to use a ratchet with a scissor jack. Should be easy enough to do (I've just been too lazy to do it!) It would make the operation of the jack much easier.

I could maybe have a hydraulic setup on my CB7 with the old jacks in my garage.

I though I saw some bottle jack that said it was 6" but I am not sure I could have read something else. It looks as if there is 7" of clearance on all of the jack points, so maybe it might fit, wouldn't be practical because I would assume if the jack is 6" tall it could probably only raise another 5".Be unique, like every other person.
