Clunking noise while turning steering wheel.

Hey guys, I'm still in the process of getting all this bent crap out of my car, after hitting that curb. This noise appeared after I replaced a lower control arm on the drivers side.
It's a thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk when turning the wheel lock to lock. I thought cv joints, but It makes the noise while I'm in park, it sounds the same when I'm moving. I the only thing I can really think of is steering rack?... It's annoying...

That's what my wagon did after my daughter hit the curb. I had a rack from my 93 EX wreck that I then rebuilt with Honda seals and installed. I recently got a rebuilt rack from Honda for $200 (for Ruby) that includes new inner tie rod ends and boots; used the rack from the wagon as the core. I got it already rebuilt because I wanted to be able to swap it quickly when the time comes and if you price Honda parts through Majestic for the seals, boots, and inner tie rods, the parts alone are $180 (assuming they are using Honda parts to rebuild the rack).

Reman company is shown as AMERICAN SHOWA, I sent Majestic a note asking if they use Honda parts. Edit: Talked with my local Honda parts guy, he indicated that AS would use Honda parts to re-manufacture the racks.

Edit: Looked up AS; they appear to be an OEM supplier to Honda and others for power steering pumps and racks with a large facility right here in southern Ohio. Sent them a question as well.

Wow. I learned my lesson, don't hit the freaking curb!

You purchased it from honda for $200? Like you went to a dealership?
I'm going to have to take the rack out to replace the subframe anyways...

Yes, I went to a dealership. I'm leery of aftermarket parts like this. I do enough business with my local dealer that I can call them and order parts over the phone (most have to prepay) and they give me 20% off.

            Video: sounds kinda familiar.

In a quick search online I didn't find any "OEM" Reman rack and pinions

                Honda part number 06536-SM4-515RM

6/21/2017: This part now shows as discontinued on most Honda OEM parts sites. I just got one today that seemed to be one of only three available in the country. They did still want a used one as a core.

Would not recommend Detroit Axle. I bought that exact part you linked on Amazon. The boots tore the first time the rack was exercised lock-to-lock. From what I can tell they probably reseal the rack but aren't doing a proper rebuild (notice they don't say its been rebuilt, just that it's tested).

It's cheaper to go on Rockauto and get a A1 Cardone rebuilt rack, about $100 after core (although you have to pay for shipping both ways, but still cheaper than Detroit Axle). The boots on the A1 rack look and feel like OE, not the paper-thin material Detroit Axle was using.

$200 for Honda OE sounds like the best deal of all.

For a lot of things on our cars it's honestly just best to replace with OEM. Most of us have learned this the hard way. We know it's more money to buy the OEM reman but you probably won't replace it for 10-20 years either. A reman could have a very short lifespan or could last a good while, but I doubt any of them will last nearly as long as OEM. I've honestly just deleted the power steering in all my Accord and converted them to manual racks. Our cars really aren't that heavy in the front. I have to parallel park all the time at work it really isn't a big deal not to have the assist. Also if you do convert to a manual rack you have a much better sense and feel of the road through the steering wheel.

On a side note, if your going to keep this Accord for a long time get to know your parts guys at the local dealership. My Honda parts guys sells me stuff at wholesale +10% normally. On some bigger ticket items he throws me a bone sometimes and I can get straight wholesale cost. It's even better when I tell them I'm only willing to pay $xx for a part and they do it. I've gotten a bunch of stuff that lists well over $200-300 for an even $200 because that's what I told them I was willing to pay for it. Granted it does take a long time to build up a relationship like this with the parts guys. I've been using this Honda dealership for 10 years now, but it has certainly paid off to establish a relationship. I can order anything I want also without having to prepay like almost everyone else does.

Oh wow. I will not be purchasing that one then!

I've never ordered from Rockauto, mainly because of how archaic their website looks. But since you've already purchased that one, that helps. haha.

I've thought about just deleting power steering, because the whole system needs work in my car! (Hoses are due to be replaced, pump is leaking making noise.) But I don't know if I would like it though, I know there's "because racecar", but this is my daily, and I do a lot of highway cruising...

Oh thank you! There's a pile of places to buy OEM online for $200 plus shipping.

If you're doing mostly highway crusing, you'll not even miss it. The power steering in the Accords really only do anything below about 20MPH. On the highway I believe the system is actually turned off. Besides, it's a good workout for your arms when you park

I daily my Accord all summer long and don't have the power steering. I don't even miss it. I truly prefer not to have it, like I said the front end of the Accord isn't that heavy. I have to parallel park at work all the time, street parking. If you don't really have to do any or very little of it there really isn't a reason not to convert to manual. At the slowest roll you can turn the wheel 1 handed. Just when it's sitting on it's full weight it takes a little effort to turn.
