It doesn't actually turn off, but the power steering speed sensor is actually a small pump that counteracts the main pump to reduce system pressure as vehicle speed (differential ring gear) increases. The faster you go, the less assist the system provides.

Really?! I had no idea. So what's involved with deleting it? I still need a new rack and pinion...

I have to parallel park at work all the time, street parking. If you don't really have to do any or very little of it there really isn't a reason not to convert to manual. At the slowest roll you can turn the wheel 1 handed. Just when it's sitting on it's full weight it takes a little effort to turn.
You're making me consider it now! Are there any good threads on how to do it? What did you do? I don't wanna go buy an expensive OEM rack if I'm not even keeping power steering right?

You can use your existing rack. There is a write up in the DIY section. If you read towards the end I've added a bit to keep the play out of the rack. But it's all on the forums. Basically everything will go except the rack. All the soft and hard lines, reservoir, pump, and bracket. It's a good bit of weight, then just break down the rack, remove internals and grease it all up. Bam, manual rack.

He may have messed his rack up hitting the curb, so he may need another just to have a good rack even without the power assist stuff.

I've never ordered from Rockauto, mainly because of how archaic their website looks. But since you've already purchased that one, that helps. haha.
Don't be fooled by the website appearance. They have hands-down the best parts catalog. Unlike local stores, they show the actual vendor, not the house brands, so it's easier to tell what you're actually buying. (A lot of vendors relabel their parts and its hard enough to tell what you're getting but a "Duralast" part could literally be anything made by anybody)

Be aware that they charge shipping based on what warehouse the parts are coming out of. Normally there are enough choices to get everything out one or two warehouses. It seems annoying at first but it's a big reason they can offer better prices than anyone else - other vendors have to eat the shipping cost if it comes from multiple warehouses so they build that into their prices.
