Besides for recreation, there are many many medical applications for marijuana. In fact it was so effective that before all this medical marijuana stuff, they actually made a pill, called Marinol, which is basically synthetic thc that they'd prescribe. But compared to the real thing it really didn't do that much.

People use it for everything, ranging from nausea from chemotherapy or nausea in general really, to insomnia, to chronic pain, to muscle spasms, to inducing hunger in chemo patients / HIV and AIDS patients.
