The ignition timing itself isn't an issue, so long as you can get the base timing correct then wherever the distributor happens to be rotationally it's OK. But, if the camshaft is not correctly timed then this is a quite significant issue, and one that will affect the engine performance for the obvious reason that the valve timing will be incorrect. This isn't to say that I can guarantee your cam timing is wrong, or that if it is that it is the cause of the high idle, but...
