$3500 is a hell of a deal! I paid $3100 for my 89 4runner, drove it a year and turned around and sold it for like $3300 with 24X,XXX miles... or maybe $3500 cant remember exactly.

Mike, that truck was a deal.

I found a few ones here and there around those prices, but nothing for the Xtra cab. The closest I found was a 94 Shortbox with 88k for $4300ish.

Once again we think alike! I just got a 5.9L 4x4 Durango a few months ago! Trucks are a different breed but they can be fun! Despite what everyone is saying about dropping it I think you should keep it the same height or raise it a little more. It's useful and practical as it is. Dropping it takes all of that away and besides you already have a project vehicle. That's one clean older truck!

thanks pat! not only do we think alike in choices, but also i feel about the truck, you nailed my thoughts exactly. im really excited to do this clutch job on it, the thought of being able to do major repair work without even having to jack the truck up is still completely beyond me.

with this still being new to me, i spent a couple hours last night reading through the factory service manual, through all of the 'system description and layout' sections. this appears to be a very well thought-out engine design, i appreciate how its built and it reminds me of the attention and well thought out engineering that i love Honda for.

anyway just wanted to post an update, i picked up some more parts for this thing:

                    • upper gasket set - includes every main seal+gasket minus the headgaskets. exhaust, all the IM ones, most importantly the *valve cover* gaskets, plus many other grommets and oil seals. cost me only $2 more than a pair of VC gaskets from autozone, and they are all real Felpro too (not ebay)
                    • injector seal kit - includes all orings/seats plus new filters and pintle caps
                    • oil pan gasket
                    • distributor cap and rotor
                    • NGK V-Power plugs
                    • can of seafoam
                    • oil and filter, for engine and transmission
                    • PCV valve

during the clutch job (coming soon) i will replace anything else i come across that needs attention. then with a solid fresh clutch i will be doing the full tuneup and tweaking. thing should be running perfect soon!!

Wait...isn't this the motor also notorious for eating head gaskets?

no really. they had a recall on the original head gaskets. they would fail out of nowhere.

up until 2002 or something is when they stopped the recall on them. i read a few stories about people that didn't have a problem with the head gaskets, but others that MAY have been due to it, and they usually walked out with a new, 0 mile motor and a bunch of new parts.

well during this past northeast snowstorm, this truck has treated me VERY well, it was a pleasure cruising around while everybody else was getting stuck!!!! unfortunately with the rise in usage and clutch feathering, the clutch is finally toast. every time i stop, you can smell clutch burning, and its beginning to slip more and more often. so its parked for now. i still need to replace the clutch/FW, i have all the parts, just not the time.

for christmas i got a few things for the truck:
                            - new MP3/CD headunit
                            - a fully concealed power windows & power lock conversion kit!!!!!!!!!! my girlfriend is amazing!
                            - new marine-application wingnut battery terminals (my + end keeps falling off)

i spent an hour pulling apart the dash and installing the new deck, only to find that the rear speaker outputs are completely dead, and its not because of my wiring. so i had to uninstall it and I will be shipping it back to crutchfield for replacement, so thats a bummer.

while i had it apart, i was able to install something that every car needs, that my CB7 made me very accustomed to having: a button that you can press while the car is off, to make the clock light up. very simple wiring, all i needed was the button, a diode, and a couple inches of wire - but its VERY useful. the accord spoiled me!

ill post pictures as i finally get more of the big stuff installed!

thank god because the 2VZ was the biggest hunk of crap next to the 7M

I believe you were thinking of the 7M

And mike, its probably been beaten to death here, but 22R is the way to go. Definately my favorite engine from Toyota next to the JZ Family. You shoulda gotten the Turbo 22R toy truck!!

i plan to run this thing until i have serious problems with the engine. at that point, id probably swap something in place of that... but im not even going to THINK about that yet, i just got it!

anyway justin / doctorcipher came up and helped me start doing the clutch this weekend. we got everything apart, including pulling the oil pan (not pictured). upon getting the flywheel off i found a leaking rear main seal, so i have to wait until i can get a replacement at the dealership on monday before i can put everything back together.

having dug into it this far, i have to say, this thing really isnt that great to work on. :X there were a lot of things stuffed deep into weird corners that were really hard to get to, but i guess having a v6 + tranny + transfer + 2 differentials makes for a tight cramp, i shouldnt try to compare it to my 4cyl in the accord :P though all of the fasteners being rusted and stuck didnt help, but having air tools did

ill get to the pictures. let me know any comments or questions, as soon as i get to replace that rear main ill be able to continue putting everything back together and ill get the rest of the pics up
